Elizabeth Barlow has sung with Vox Humana throughout its life and before that, from time to time, with Gregoriana. Elizabeth is also a permanent member of Vox Angelica and Vox Celestis. Julien Chilcott-Monk has composed many pieces for this fine mezzo-soprano and her solo voice always features in the recitals. The choir performs the director’s music – and he has written much for them – alongside music from much earlier ages.
The recitals usually contain early and late chant from the first millennium, music by St Hildegard, medieval motets and music of the Renaissance masters, usually the less well known.
The choirs sing sacred music exclusively, and enjoy dipping into the vast range available – from St Ambrose to St Gregory to St Hildegard, and on through the second millennium to the Renaissance and beyond. Occasionally, when lecture/recitals are given, medieval and Renaissance musical instruments and shown and played to give the audiences an idea of the musical world of the time.
